Canada: Mental Health and Climate Change

On Thursday, June 5, 2014, Sanjay Khanna delivered an invited Medical Grand Rounds keynote at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, or CAMH, in Toronto, Canada.

The keynote was entitled “Managing Risk and Change: How Extensively Might Climate Change Affect Mental Health?” The aim of the keynote was to raise awareness among mental health professionals—practicing psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, psychiatric residents, among others—of the projected impacts of climate change on the burden of mental illness in Canada.

According to Mr. Khanna, the challenge of addressing the burden of mental illness in Canada will only grow as Canadians face socioeconomic shocks as well as abrupt change related to extreme weather and climatic shifts.

The keynote was praised by Ivan Silver, MD, CAMH’s award-winning Vice President of Education, for providing a valuable leading-edge perspective for mental health professionals.
